چکیده

Impressions of footwear are commonly found in crime scenes. The quality and wide variability of these impressions makes their analysis difficult. This research will develop new computational methods to assist the forensic footwear examiner in the U.S. The research involves developing a database of representative footwear print images so that appropriate algorithms can be developed and their error rates can be determined. Algorithms for identifying special features such as wear marks and embedded pebbles will be developed. Matching algorithms to be developed will be for both the tasks of verification, where the goal is to determine whether the footwear evidence is from a particular suspect's shoe, or that of identification, where the goal is to determine the brand of the shoe from a known set of brands. In each case a quantitative measure of the result of matching will be provided. In the identification mode, the tools will allow the narrowing down of possibilities in a database of known prints. Another goal of the project is to assist the U.S. footwear examiner is homicides and assaults where there are no known prints to match. For this purpose a classification tool is to be developed, where the objective is to generate from the evidence a set of characteristics, e.g., gender, size, and brand. The work will be conducted following the guidelines of SWGTREAD and in close consultation with forensic footwear and/or tire tread examiners.

Analysis of Footwear Impression Evidence Analysis of Footwear Impression Evidence

Impressions of footwear are commonly found in crime scenes. The quality and wide variability of these impressions and the large number of footwear outsole designs makes their manual analysis time-consuming and difficult. The goal of this research was to develop new computational methods that will eventually assist the forensic footwear examiner in the U.S. Two scenarios encountered by the foren...

Use of leuco crystal violet to enhance shoe prints in blood.

The application of Leuco Crystal Violet (LCV) for the enhancement of footwear and fingerprint impression evidence was first utilized in the FBI Laboratory in late 1993, after learning from Mr. John F. Fischer (1) of the formulation of this reagent. Mr. Fischer subsequently made a presentation on this topic at the International Symposium on Footwear and Tire Tread Impression Evidence at the FBI ...

Computational Methods for the Analysis of Footwear Impression Evidence

Impressions of footwear are commonly found in crime scenes. Yet they are not routinely used as evidence due to: (i) the wide variability and quality of impressions, and (ii) the large number of footwear outsole designs which makes their manual comparison time-consuming and difficult. Computational methods hold the promise of better use of footwear evidence in investigations and also in providin...

Footwear and Foot Impressions: Foot Impressions and Linking Foot to Shoe

The forensic application of barefoot morphology involves the study of the physical features of feet and the impressions they make. This type of examination is used in cases when either an impression has been made at the scene of a crime or when the wearer of a shoe needs to be determined. However rare the application, in instances where it is needed to answer a question in a criminal case, bare...

Unsupervised Footwear Impression Analysis and Retrieval from Crime Scene Data

Footwear impressions are one of the most frequently secured types of evidence at crime scenes. For the investigation of crime series they are among the major investigative notes. In this paper, we introduce an unsupervised footwear retrieval algorithm that is able to cope with unconstrained noise conditions and is invariant to rigid transformations. A main challenge for the automated impression...
